Congratulations. You've made the decision to migrate your instance.

The next preparatory steps are critical to ensure a smooth migration which is transparent for all users. Yet rest assured you're in the right place to get all the required information. As we have more than ten years of Atlassian support experience under our belt, Valiantys has certainly led its share of successful and painless migrations.

We're spilling the secrets for
a successful migration, so listen up

Step 1Assess if your expectations are realistic

  • Analyze your requirements and expectations
  • Check that what you need will actually be fulfilled by the migration

Step 2Audit the instance

  • Verify the version of your Jira instance
  • Analyze how your users are managed
  • Make a list of all the apps which are installed and check that the functionalities will be preserved in the new instance. Take note: some apps are not available in the cloud or are incompatible with cloud or server, respectively.
  • Write a list of all the tasks which need to be done in order to execute the migration. This will give you everything you need to do the migration on your own, however if you want to entrust the project with someone who has a technically-savvy record with migrations you can hand over the keys to one of our Valiantys consultants.
  • Plan the migration ahead so the timing doesn't affect your users

Step 3The migration itself

  • If necessary, install the latest version of Jira
  • Backup your data and install the test platform
  • Migrate the data to the test platform
  • Perform data consistency checks
  • Execute the necessary tests and make corrections according to feedback provided by the user
  • Migrate to production
    • What to consider when migrating from Server to Cloud

    • Make sure you're updated to the most recent version of Jira
    • Export the backup of the instance
    • Export any additional files
    • If the data is notably heavy when exporting (or importing), it is possible that your resources internally may not be sufficient. If it is the case, don't hesitate to get in touch with Atlassian support
    • What to consider when migrating from Cloud to Server

    • Install the test instance with the same apps you have in your cloud instance
    • Map your users to ensure compatibility between Jira and the user directory on the server instance
    • Determine the size of your target infrastructure. As an option, you can limit your investment by allowing Valiantys to host your Jira server instance.

Step 4Change management

  • Train your users, project admins and global admins
  • Prepare the customized user documentation (include both the before and after, with screenshots)

Step 5Support

  • To help you during or after the migration, Valiantys offers support which is adapted to your needs
  • Our offer covers both Atlassian applications and Marketplace apps
